“It is better to debate a question without settling it than to settle a question without debating it”- Joseph Joubert
On 11th June 2019, the Frank Anthony Inter- School Debate competition was held at Bishops School, Kalyani Nagar, Pune. Our school was one of the schools that participated in this competition. The two best speakers of our school were chosen for this competition which was: Master Vatsal Rangoonwala from Grade 10A and Master Sarthak Lamba from Grade 9B i.e. myself. We began quite early for Pune.
We were accompanied by our English teacher Mrs Rashmi Sandhu for our assistance at this debate competition. We reached the Bishops School, at 10:00 a.m. We were then escorted to their library. There were students with their teacher on every table. Later, everyone was offered breakfast. After the declaration of the topic, which was, “EDUCATION FOSTERS DEMOCRACY”, all teachers were sent out and we were given two hours for the preparation of our speeches.
A total of eleven schools were participating in this competition. The sight of the auditorium and its stage made us all nervous. It seemed to me as if I am the lone speaker. As the debate commenced, each speaker had to speak on the topic for about 4 minutes. After the speech, the mediator had to decide who he would give the chance to ask a rebuttal question.
Most of the students were quite good and spoke in relevance to the topic. My friend Vatsal spoke in and against of the motion and I chose to speak in favour. This inter-school debate competition indeed was a good learning experience for both of us.
